Gabriel has been at San Pedro since 2018, joining after years working for Cono Sur and Cousiño Macul. He is in charge of the Cachapoal Andes winery and is the head winemak er for the company ’ s icon wines: Altair, Cabo de Hornos, Sideral, Kankana and Tierras Moradas.
I have been fortunate to spend plenty of time with Gabriel tasting through the wines and discussing them. It is always a pleasure to taste together, and more im portantly to see the evolution of these wines under his guidance. Overall, I have seen the wines as a whole become more elegant and refined, and what Gabriel really manages to achieve is a real drinkability in wines that still maintain their intensity and concentration. Specifically, Cabo de Hornos 2022 stood out this year with its amazing approachability at such a young age, yet clearly it also has great ability to age.
The winery in Cachapoal is one of the most stunning in Chile, and is clearly a great terroir for Cabernet Sauvignon. The winery is somewhat of an Aladdin ’ s cave, with a plethora of fascinating vessels, eggs and concrete spheres that are very close to Gabriel ’ s heart, it seems! It is this innovation and willingness to experiment in the wine ry that has driven the progression of the wines. Sideral remains one of the best - value wines available, and the 2023 is another great success. It is a wonderful and complete expression of this beautiful part of Chile’s wine territory.
Congratulations to Gabriel and the whole team at San Pedro on this achievement.
