History
Vinos JP Martin is the personal project of winemaker José Pablo Martin, who, after more than two and a half decades making wine across southern, central and, in particular, northern Chile, decided to strike out on his own. The project made its successful debut in 2022 with its first labels from the 2021 vintage. The wines come from two distinctive northern valleys: Huasco in Atacama and Limarí in Coquimbo.
Conceived as a tribute to the geological and winemaking history of the so-called Norte Verde, each wine reflects an extreme terroir and offers a glimpse of a remarkable landscape where the desert meets the sea under a cool desert climate.
Vineyards
Huasco Valley, Buena Esperanza
Located in the Atacama Region, 690 kilometres north of Santiago and just 36 kilometres from the Pacific Ocean as the crow flies, this vineyard was planted between 2017 and 2018 on alluvial terrace No. 3, on the plateau south of the Huasco River, at approximately 375 metres above sea level. Its calcareous soils give the wines a distinctive mineral structure. Pinot Noir (clones 777 and 115), Chardonnay (clone 548) and Grenache (clone 435) thrive here, all remarkably well adapted to the valley's desert conditions. Precise vineyard management allows each variety to express the delicate balance between the rigours of the climate and its own varietal character, resulting in wines with freshness, tension and precision. New plantings in 2024 have further broadened the exploration of this extreme terroir.
Limarí Valley
Some 400 kilometres north of Santiago, in the Coquimbo Region, JP Martin grows grapes in two key areas: El Encanto and Quebrada Seca, both situated on alluvial terraces of the Limarí River and under the constant influence of the Pacific Ocean.
El Encanto
Thirty kilometres from the sea and at 247 metres above sea level, El Encanto combines calcareous gravel soils with a semi-arid Mediterranean climate, creating ideal conditions for Syrah, which develops refined structure, spicy nuances and a silky texture.
Quebrada Seca
Twenty-seven kilometres from the ocean and at 261 metres above sea level, Quebrada Seca has calcareous soils with a clay component that provides good water retention, encouraging precise ripening of Carménère and Pedro Jiménez. These varieties express the minerality and depth of the terroir, with natural freshness and structural balance.
