History
From the outset, Viña Cono Sur has been defined by an innovative outlook and extensive expertise in Pinot Noir and aromatic white varieties. This vision led the winery to identify favourable growing conditions for these varieties early on, making them a fundamental part of its identity and a reflection of Chile’s viticultural diversity.
Over the years, Cono Sur has established Pinot Noir as its signature variety, becoming the first Chilean winery to produce and export premium Pinot Noir. It later created Ocio, Chile’s first icon wine made from the variety.
This expertise also extends to white varieties such as Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, with a continued focus on innovation and on expressing the diversity of Chile’s wine-growing regions.
Vineyards
Viña Cono Sur has vineyards across several of Chile’s wine-growing valleys, from the Valparaíso Region to the Biobío Region. This geographical diversity provides a range of climatic conditions, soils and altitudes, allowing different varieties and styles to thrive according to the characteristics of each region.
Casablanca Valley
Located between Santiago and Valparaíso, the Casablanca Valley has predominantly granitic and clay soils. Cono Sur grows mainly Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay here, varieties that benefit from the valley’s conditions, developing freshness and aromatic expression.
San Antonio Valley
Located in the Valparaíso Region, just a few kilometres from the Pacific Ocean, the San Antonio Valley has a strong maritime influence. The Humboldt Current, cool temperatures and constant coastal breezes encourage slow, even ripening. The soils are predominantly red clay and granite. Pinot Noir is the principal variety grown here, with conditions particularly well suited to producing wines with freshness, balance and character.
Colchagua Valley
Located in the O’Higgins Region, the Colchagua Valley is characterised by a Mediterranean climate and a diversity of soils. Together with the influence of the Andes, these conditions favour the cultivation of both red and white varieties, producing wines with expressive character and a clear sense of place.
Maule Valley
Located in the Maule Region, the valley is characterised by a diversity of climates and soils. The influence of both the Andes and the Coastal Range, together with a wide diurnal temperature range, allows a broad range of red and white varieties to thrive. These conditions produce wines with vibrant fruit expression, freshness and character.
Biobío Valley
Located in the Biobío Region in southern Chile, the valley is characterised by a cool climate and red, clay-rich, mineral soils. These conditions have allowed Cono Sur to develop particular expertise in aromatic white varieties. The main varieties grown by the winery in this area are Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio and Pinot Noir.
