History
Almaviva was born in 1997 from a profound alliance between two historic families of the wine world: Baron Philippe de Rothschild, founded in 1853, and Viña Concha y Toro, founded in 1883. The agreement was sealed by Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, then Chairwoman of the Supervisory Board of Baron Philippe de Rothschild S.A., and Don Eduardo Guilisasti Tagle, Chairman of Viña Concha y Toro S.A.
Under the technical supervision of both partners, Almaviva’s first vintage was released onto the market in 1998, immediately becoming an international success.
Almaviva represents the meeting of two worlds and two winemaking cultures. Chile contributes the power of nature, expressed through the terroir of Puente Alto, its climatic conditions and soils, together with the passion of its people; while France contributes its savoir-faire, its long-standing winemaking tradition and a constant pursuit of elegance.
Vineyards
Puente Alto
Almaviva’s vineyard is located in Puente Alto, in the upper part of the Maipo Valley, at the foothills of the Andes Mountains and on the northern bank of the Maipo River. It lies at 650 metres above sea level and has 65 productive hectares dedicated to the production of Almaviva. Its oldest vines were planted in 1978.
The soils are stony, poor and of alluvial origin. The climate is semi-arid Mediterranean, with average annual rainfall of 320 mm, concentrated mainly during winter. Winters are cold and rainy, while the ripening season is characterised by cool nights and mild summer days.
The vineyard is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot, with Cabernet Sauvignon as the predominant variety.
