History
Located in Millapoa, 15 kilometres from Nacimiento on the banks of the Biobío River, Viña El Pabellón is a family winery with a winemaking tradition spanning four generations. Its story can be traced back to a property inherited by a soldier who fought in the War of the Pacific, a legacy the family has preserved while maintaining a close connection to the land and the identity of the region.
At the heart of the estate are its País vines, more than 100 years old, alongside a Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard planted around 30 years ago. The winery produces red and sparkling wines from these varieties, bringing together the ancestral character of País with the distinctive expression of southern Chile.
The winery combines traditional and ancestral winemaking methods with modern technology focused on vineyard care and wine quality. The project reflects the family's commitment to preserving its winemaking heritage and conveying, through its wines, the history, landscape and identity of Millapoa and the Biobío Valley.
Vineyards
The vineyards lie on the southern bank of the Biobío River in Millapoa—a name that means “golden belly” in Mapudungun. They comprise 2,000 dry-farmed País vines more than 100 years old and 2,500 Cabernet Sauvignon vines around 30 years old. The latter were originally trained on a simple trellis system but have gradually been converted to head pruning, the traditional system used in the other vineyards.
The vineyards have a diverse range of soils. Red clay soils mixed with quartz predominate on slopes of varying gradients, while the flatter areas have sandy-silty loam soils. The climate is cool Mediterranean, with well-defined seasons and a significant moderating influence from the Biobío River, together with the proximity of the Pacific Ocean.
