History
De Toro Alexander grew out of a family winemaking tradition that began in 1998, when Rodrigo De Toro started out as a winegrower in Ciénagas del Name, north of Cauquenes. Ten years later, in 2008, the project moved to Los Despachos, 13 kilometres south of Cauquenes, where the family began planting the vineyard that would become the foundation of De Toro Alexander. Located in the coastal dry-farming area of southern Maule, the estate has been farmed organically from the outset and is certified organic.
The second generation, led by Joaquín De Toro, has driven the project's commercial development and helped shape the identity of the brand, selecting a small proportion of the family's harvest to produce wines defined by purity, vibrant fruit and balance.
In 2019, the grapes for the first wine to be released under the De Toro Alexander label were harvested. The project subsequently established its first commercial range with three Gran Reserva wines from the 2021 vintage, followed by the Unoaked 2022 wines and further stylistic explorations currently in development.
Its philosophy is rooted in respect for origin and minimal intervention, with a contemporary interpretation of Maule expressed through wines that are fresh, authentic and easy to enjoy.
Vineyards
Located in Los Despachos, approximately 13 kilometres south of Cauquenes in the Maule Valley, the family vineyard lies in the coastal dry-farming area of southern Maule and has been farmed organically from the outset.
The vines are trained on a vertical shoot positioning system and grow on red clay soils with granite deposits throughout the soil profile. The climate is Mediterranean, with warm, dry summers that favour fruit ripening. In cooler years, night-time temperatures help preserve freshness and fruit expression.
The principal varieties planted are Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère, Carignan, Syrah, Grenache, Petit Verdot, Chardonnay and Viognier.
