History
Viu Manent is a Chilean winery owned by the Viu family, located in the heart of the Colchagua Valley. It produces fine wines with a designation of origin, primarily from its three vineyards in this valley.
Its origins date back to 1935 when Catalan immigrant Miguel Viu García and his two sons, Agustín and Miguel Viu Manent, founded Bodegas Viu in Santiago, Chile, focusing on the trade and bottling of wines for the local market under the "Vinos Viu" brand.
Viu Manent owns Malbec vineyards that are over 100 years old and is a pioneer in Chile for cultivating this grape variety. It was the first winery in the country to produce and label a Malbec wine in 1993.
Currently, the winery is led by José Miguel Viu Bottini, who has been responsible for steering it towards export markets, establishing it as a producer of high-end wines exported worldwide. Additionally, he has been one of the main drivers of the development of wine tourism in Colchagua, positioning it as Chile's leading wine destination.
The winery's enotourism and gastronomic offerings invite visitors to immerse themselves in the world of wine as privileged spectators. The recent hotel project, Vibo Wine Lodge, serves as the perfect complement to enrich the tourist experience at Viu Manent.
Viu Manent has been selected for five consecutive years among the Top 50 World’s Best Vineyards by the World’s Best Vineyards academy (2019 - 2023).
Vineyards
San Carlos
D.O. Colchagua Valley, Santa Cruz area. This is the original and oldest vineyard of the company, established in the mid-19th century with pre-phylloxera vines brought from France. The planted area covers 150 hectares, with century-old vines of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon, among other varieties. The soil is sandy-clay, porous, well-drained, and very deep. Planted varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, Syrah, and Sangiovese in reds; and Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and Viognier in whites.
La Capilla
D.O. Colchagua Valley, Peralillo area. In search of new terroirs within the valley to bring richness and special characteristics to the grapes, Viu Manent acquired this property in 1990 and fully planted it, undertaking major soil and irrigation works. It covers an area of 50 hectares. The soil is shallow, well-drained, and low in fertility, composed of sands, which produce distinctive and characterful wines. Planted varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Carménère, and Malbec.
El Olivar
D.O. Colchagua Valley, Peralillo area. Acquired in 1999, this 325-hectare estate includes plantings on hillside slopes, with poorer soils and better drainage, which allows for wines of great personality. It currently has 70 hectares of vineyards in production, with a plan for maximum expansion to 150 hectares. Planted varieties: Syrah, Malbec, Grenache, Carménère, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mourvèdre, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc.
