History
Viña Maquis has a long winemaking tradition dating back to the 18th century in the heart of the Colchagua Valley. It was acquired by the Hurtado family in 1916. The winery focuses on the pursuit of excellence through the production of authentic wines from ungrafted vines and their own massal selections, achieving a natural balance of fruit that faithfully reflects its origin.
Since its inception, Viña Maquis has promoted sustainable practices, such as creating biological corridors to increase biodiversity, naturally managing pests with chickens and sheep, and innovatively using geothermal energy in the winery to reduce its carbon footprint in winemaking.
With over 300 years of winemaking heritage at the site, Viña Maquis, along with its technical team and renowned international consultants, produces wines of consistently high quality over time. Their iconic wines, Maquis Franco and Viola, are currently distributed in Europe, Asia, and the United States through the négociants of La Place de Bordeaux, France.
Vineyards The unique terroir of Maquis is surrounded by two rivers that protect the vineyards from spring frosts and cool the environment during the summer. This location helps create a microclimate that moderates temperatures, producing wines with a natural balance, floral notes, fresh fruit, and delicate herbal aromas. The area's great biodiversity maintains a balance in the vineyard, reflected in the purity of the fruit in the final wines.
The soils are of alluvial origin, with high clay content and a thick layer of gravel that provides excellent drainage. The vineyards can remain dry-farmed for years with normal rainfall, as the moisture is effectively retained in the soil and released slowly to the vines, resulting in very elegant tannins. The best-adapted massal selections are Cabernet Franc, Carménère, and Cabernet Sauvignon, which are planted on their own roots, without grafts, playing a key role in the complexity and finesse of wines made on a human scale with a precise viticultural and oenological team.
