History Vinos JP Martin is the personal project of winemaker José Pablo Martin Vergara, who, after more than two decades crafting wines in the south, centre, and, most notably, in the north of Chile, decided to set out on his own path. His first vintage comes from two northern valleys of unique character: the Huasco Valley in Atacama and the Limarí Valley in Coquimbo.
Conceived as a tribute to the geological and winemaking history of the so-called Norte Verde, each wine is a testament to an extreme terroir and an invitation to discover a singular landscape, where the desert meets the sea.
Vineyards
Buena Esperanza, Huasco Valley Located in the Atacama Region, 690 kilometres north of Santiago and just 36 kilometres in a straight line from the Pacific Ocean, this vineyard was planted between 2017 and 2018 on marine-origin alluvial terraces along the southern bank of the Huasco River, at an altitude of around 250 metres above sea level. It thrives on calcareous soils that lend the wines a distinctive mineral structure. Pinot Noir (Dijon clones 777 and 115), Chardonnay (clone 548), and Garnacha (clone 435) flourish here, all of them having adapted remarkably well to the valley’s desert conditions. Careful management of these specific clones allows for the capture of a delicate balance between the valley’s climatic rigour and the grapes’ varietal character, producing wines noted for their freshness, tension, and precision. In 2024, new plantings further strengthened the exploration of this extreme territory.
Limarí Valley Four hundred kilometres north of Santiago, in the Coquimbo Region, JP Martin cultivates his vineyards in two key sites: El Encanto and Quebrada Seca, both on alluvial terraces of the Limarí River and under the constant influence of the ocean. El Encanto, 30 kilometres from the sea and at 247 metres above sea level, combines calcareous gravel soils with a semi-arid Mediterranean climate, creating ideal conditions for Syrah, which here develops refined structure, spicy nuances, and a silky texture. Quebrada Seca, 27 kilometres from the ocean and at 261 metres above sea level, features calcareous soils with clay content that provides moderate water retention, favouring the precise ripening of Carménère and Pedro Jiménez. These varieties faithfully convey the minerality and depth of the terroir, standing out for their natural freshness and structural balance.
