History
The winery was designed and built in 2002 by Arturo Pérez Rojas, an agronomist and winemaker, with the vision of magnifying a terroir he considered unique and exceptional. After his passing in 2013, his wife and four children decided to continue his legacy, seeking guidance from Éric Verdier, a specialist in comparative sensory analysis of great terroirs. An admirer of Arturo Pérez's work, Éric Verdier immediately recognised the exceptional character of the terroir and accepted the challenge of advising the family.
The philosophy of Viña Arturo Pérez Rojas centres on the belief that wine is made in the vineyard, not in the winery. The winery's primary function is to accompany the grapes from the vineyard, allowing each vintage to reflect its special character. To bring out the best of the terroir, they produce their wine with native fermentation, without adding natural or artificial yeasts or nutrients that could interfere with the unique character of the terroir.
"Piedra Sagrada" is the emblematic and sole wine of this winery, a terroir wine that presents a different facet each year, always maintaining a touch of pure elegance.
Vineyard
The vineyard is located in Pirque, Maipo Andes, situated on the fourth alluvial terrace formed during the last glacial periods. Covering an area of 3.8 hectares, it is exclusively planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, using a massal selection and ungrafted vines.
The soils are poor, with a thin silty loam layer with low organic matter content. At a depth of between 50 and 120 cm, there are many rounded stones of varying sizes, a product of river transport, along with significant proportions of clay. These characteristics provide excellent drainage and porosity.
The climate is dry Mediterranean, characterised by dry summers and intense solar radiation. Piedra Sagrada is located within one of the cooler areas of Pirque, experiencing annual frosts in both spring and autumn. During summer, temperatures average 31°C, with highs reaching 37°C, dropping to 12°C or lower at night due to the cool breeze descending from the Andes Mountains in the evening, creating a thermal fluctuation of 25°C. This factor is crucial as it helps preserve the freshness and aromas in the wines. During the ripening and harvest periods, the near absence of rainfall ensures excellent sanitary quality of the grapes.
